Kees has been surfing and sailing his whole life. Water, wind, waves and weather are his passion. In 2011 he moved to Dakar, Senegal and instantly fell in love with the Senegalese waters. Lying between the waves when surfing, he watched how the local fishermen with their traditional fishing boats, “Pirogues”, of all sizes and colours, moved with ease and grace through the waves. A perfect design which hasn`t changed for hundreds of years. On the beach he saw a lot of Pirogues that were not used and worn out. The existence of many layers of paint on the Pirogues showed the wood had been used 2 to 3 times over the years for different Pirogues. This is because the fishermen could not afford new wood. The tropical red wood used for making the Pirogues gives away a solid build, but even this wood eventually has to give in to salt water, sun, wind and fishing line shavings. The artist Kees found a way to give the pieces of Pirogue a new life by rebuilding them into lamps, using metal or wood as a stand and high quality wires, switches and fittings.
